Don Berns (aka Dr. Trance)
In addition to being one of the leading figures in Toronto’s electronic dance community, Don Berns was also one of Canada’s most revered radio DJ personalities. Berns came to Canada in the 1980 from the United States radio networks to work for CFNY as Program Director and was a huge catalyst (along with Chris Sheppard) delivering new “music for the Masses” as Sheppard would say every week on the Pirate Radio Sessions in the 90’s. 
Berns moved on to work with several other Toronto stations after his time at CFNY including NRG 108, 88.5, Chin Fm and Hot 103.5 FM. He was a mentor to some of Toronto's biggest names in the electronic music industry and took Raves from warehouses to mainstream venues that include, The Toronto Island airport, Ontario Science Centre, and CN Tower with his production companies Nitrous, Atlantis and Effective setting the stage for Toronto promoters to move into prime locations. We honour his name, creativity, and timeless contribution with this scholarship. He paved the road for so much of today's electronic music culture in Toronto. 

Scholarship Application Criteria
The Don (Dr. Trance) Berns Scholarship Fund is intended first and foremost for students below the age of 25 with special financial considerations. Along with a characterization of your financial constraints, applicants must demonstrate a passion for music and a desire to achieve their goals in either DJing, Electronic music production or both. Successful applicants will be eligible to receive a maximum of 50% towards the tuition of their desired course. The balance of the course cost is the applicants responsibility. This is a highly competitive Scholarship. We therefore suggest being as detailed as possible in the below form. Candidates whose application most closely fits with the scholarship's mandate will be contacted by email and/or phone for a more detailed interview upon which the final decision will be made. The birth of the Don (Dr. Trance) Berns Scholarship Fund was made possible by the incredible fundraising events held in Don Berns' name shortly after his death in 2015. The continuing success of this program depends on your generous donations all of which will give young creative minds a chance to experience an art form that because of financial constraints they may not have access to.
